From Kenneth Updike’s book, Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet, page 110,

“The transmission driveshaft was changed at serial number 622952 on the 1250, 1450, and 1650 tractors to improve the machine. The 5/8 CR steel ball at the rear of the driveshaft was removed and the shaft was lengthened. An additional rubber flexible coupling disc was added to the rear of the driveshaft”

I think your mock up will tell the tale whether you need to drill a new hole or not. You're right to be concerned with maintaining enough support from the ball bushing. I had the same concern and ended up filling the existing hole and drilling a new one.

Are you replacing the ball bushing? Drive shaft is good? Sounds like you're going through a lot of work, might want to consider replacing those items too?

Good luck.
