It is a Starter / Generator. It is used to start the engine and once the engine is running, it serves as a Generator to produce electricity to handle the electrical demands of the tractor, as well as, recharge the Battery. The recharging processing is regulated by the Voltage Regulator (V/R). to prevent the battery from being overcharged.

All this is explained in the Service Manual.
