I am currently going through my recently acquired Cadet 80 Hydro tractor and am coming up to something I need clarification on. I understand the tractor pretty well uses a 2-part drive mechanism consisting of the actual hydrostatic transmission and the gear reduction drive unit. From what I am reading in the manuals, both take Hytran as the suggested fluid. Because I have no idea when these fluids have been serviced last, I am draining them and putting new in.

When I pulled the plug on the gear reduction unit, it wasn't hytran that came out, but it was gear lube. There was Hyrtan in the hydrostatic transmission though.

1. It is draining overnight; however, is it recommended to remove the unit all together to clean it or leave it?
2. Since it had gear lube in it, should I put gear lube back in or fill with Hytran? If I put Hytran in it, will it cause any issues with it mixing with any residual of the gear lube?
3. Is there anyway to complete drain the Hydrostatic transmission as well?

I am asking the experts here because I have never had the opportuntity to work on a machine of this era and make up and I want it to stay around. Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
