Looking at the pix, it appears that that snap ring is part of the roller bearing,
and my experance with that type of bearing is that also.
I would think with the absence of a shoulder on the pinion shaft/gear, it should slide inward allowing removal.
I don't think you would gain anything removing the internal snap ring other than to allow removal of the rollers, although I am not familar with it.
If the shaft is shouldered, then you would need to pick out the snap ring and remove the rollers.
