So, the choke isn't connected? Did all this start happening after you rebuilt the carburetor, or is this problem the reason you did the rebuild?
Now, did you have the head off, before or after the running issue? A few more in dept details and picture of the underside of the head and head gasket would help out in some diagnoses.
