If your talking about the difference being that the 782 has an internal brake with all associated parts, and the 982 has the dual brakes, so it is missing the brake parts on the housing....... then it's not that they are different. One just has an internal brake and the other doesn't.

I think the reason for the part number difference has to do with the holes in the upper part of the rear housing being machined for the bearing for the PTO. IIRC, the 782's holes were not tapped, and the boss wasn't machined. I'm almost certain they (the two rear ends) are the same otherwise.
