No, doesn't need a muffler for back pressure. There is truth to getting a stack on and the carb tuned. A stack can affect HP. On a stock motor, I doubt any that you will notice, I'm just saying. Anyway, hardware store should have what you need. I don't see why you can't find any. It's just 1" pipe. I suggest a long sweep, or 2 45°'s to make a 90°. That way it's not so abrupt of a turn for the exhaust gas.
