Thanks guys,
No, I didn't do a compression check (looking back I should have, I have a tester), but the head WAS leaking oil out the front, and when I had a machinist look at the head he said "yep, burned her out". So, I'm not sure whether that was all of my problem, but I would venture to guess it certainly didn't help the cause. I actually have rebuilt several OHV engines in my previous IH tractor restoration projects, but a little Kohler sounds like something new to tackle.
Sorry about the photos being so small, I have to re-size them to post them here I guess. There is a small amount of the piston almost chipped or burned away on the side of the engine with the valves, and who knows if that damaged the rings on that side or not. There isn't a horrible ring groove worn in the bore, but I am a little more concerned with the vertical wear marks I can feel.
Thanks for the links, and I'm looking forward to learning more from you guys! I appreciate it!
