I promise you, the lock button has nothing to do with your problem. There is no lip for the lock to contact to stop the rod from being depressed too far. All it does is lock the button/lever down so that the handle can float. Like I mentioned earlier, if you can depress it too far, most likely the button is not screwed on all the way. You can get a lift handle if you want, and that will most likely fix your issue. But I think you can fix what you have.
