I've rebuilt a few (8) steering columns over the past couple years. Some I put new bearing cups in, others I reused the old. To be honest, the old ones were all still fine. The new cups were a slightly different shape, but all seemed to fit fine and the column plug went back in without a problem.
Perhaps you got the wrong parts?
