I don't know that I agree with everything to OP said, but yes, they did change the bearing cups a few years ago and I do not like the new ones at all!
The ones I used to get were shaped exactly like the ones that came out of the gear box. they were tapered toward the middle and had something of an extrusion in the center... Just like the ones that come out of the gear.
The new ones are flat on the "bottom" and do not set the same way in their respective nest.
Personally I believe that over time, the new style cups will begin to conform to their resting place and cause excess up and down play in the steering shaft. I may be proven wrong, but I sincerely believe they will.
I have however never had a problem getting the plug back in.
