I rebuilt the steering box on my 1250 this past weekend and I ran into a problem with the bearing cups. I purchased new bearings from a sponsor and the bearing cups were different from the original one. When I attempted to install the new bearings I could not get the plug threaded in far enough for the cotter pin to clear the plug. If I used the old bearing cups everything worked. I compared the new bearing cups to the pictures in the steering rebuild article in the tech section and they looked identical.

My old bearing cups cleaned up nice so I used them with the new balls and retainers. What am I missing? The new bearing cups do not sit as deep in the plug as the old ones. Is there more than one type of plug?
