It's electric, but it just might become mechanical now that it isn't anything original.
I also just sent a question to my nearest Kubota dealer about adding a tach. to my 1782. I should know within a couple days if there are parts available to do this. When I have ear plugs or muffs on I have a hard time telling how much I'm working the engine unless it starts smoking.
