Hard to say...... what did you touch? Can't think of anything in there that would make it die...... unless you just grounded the gen field and it just couldn't handle the load.
Unless you understand what is going on inside a regulator, no reason to take off the cover...... just lots of coils and wires doing their job. I have fixed a few, but usually just replace them. Yeah, they're pricey, but they usually last a long time.
