After a few miles (or once the batteries are exhausted) the batteries are dead weight.
The same car, without the batteries will get better mileage.

Same thing with the hydro, it is dead weight and drag, , until it is time to back up,

then the little wasted gas seems like nothing, compared to the convenience of instant reverse!
