I just bought a 1572 and decided to look for a rear pto and a PTO tiller for it. In my craigslist searching for a rear PTO and tiller I found a IH built 982 with a rear PTO, three point, turning brakes and wheel weights. Listed with the tractor there was a 48" PTO Tiller, 60" deck and a 48" Snowthrower. The bad part is that the onan was blown up, and disassembled. I gave the guy a call, and after a good cub cadet conversation, I locked down the deal with a deposit and my word. The only problems with the deal is that it was 500 miles away and that I had just bought a 1572 two days before hand. So that day my wife meets me for lunch and I have to explain that we now have to drive 500 miles to picked up another cub, and she reminds me that two days before we drove 1200 miles round trip to pick up the last one. So I come back with "at least this time it will only be 1000 mile round trip". She wasn't that amused, but luckily she likes road trips. Fast forward two weeks. We decide to leave Friday @ 5:30 and drive as far as I can so Saturday morning we can pick up the tractor and attachments and get back by Saturday night. We ended up driving for six hours on Friday night in blizzard like conditions, but we made it 450 miles, safely.
Saturday morning we finished up the drive and load the cub stuff and head back west, this part we only had 4 hours of snow travel and the rest was easy going.
Once I got back and was able to survey my purchases, I was quite happy with the condition of the attachments and how complete and original the tractor is. It also came with the owners manuals.
I have decided to do a full restoration on the tractor and possibly add power steering and dual hydraulics if I can find them. After looking at the engine and the broken rod, I have decided it might be cheaper and easier to repower it with a kohler command 20. I know it won't be original, but it will be a good tractor and I will use the heck out of it.
Sorry for the long post, but I was really happy to get a deal on this and I have wanted a IH 982 for a while.
