Another angle would be to leave the burden of making it start on them. Since you talked them down to $500 on the basis that they said that it runs, the failure to start might help you knock off another $50 or more. It's up to your judgement and whether you are scared that the engine really is completely shot, I am just sitting here thinking of ideas and hoping that you get a good deal.
