Default 1450 charging problem

Hey Cub fans, just got through rebuilding the engine on my 1450. thought I did everything right, but it is not charging. The Stator is fairly new and used to charge, now nothing. The engine is now basically new and runs like a champ, thought maybe it was a ground problem, so added another ground strap, still nothing. I'm wondering if it might be the resistor (probably not the right word) that sits on and partially inside the flywheel case. My question is how do you check the Stator and the resistor. When the engine is running at operating RPM, the Voltage guage runs straight up in the middle, but engage the pto and then it runs at a slight discharge. I would hate to think that I'll have to pull that motor out again to change that Stator. Hoping you guys will have some ideas!!!!
