Default Kohler twin, engine mounting

Been doing some work on my 784 and this has always had my head scratching..

The engine is mounted to a base plate with 4 of these spacers (950-3009) They seem to "dig" into the base plate and/or the engine foot.

The dimensions of these spaces are:
ID: .423" (for a 3/8" bolt)
OD: .675"
Height: .469"

I was toying with the idea of just putting (2) - 1/2" piece of flat stock (either steel or aluminum) and drill the appropriate holes on each end.
Height: .50"
Width: 1.50"
Length: 9.00"

I think these would give greater support.

The question I have is, there will be a difference of .31" in the engine mount height. Is this going to be a major concern...??? Or should I go 3/8"...??
