Actually I have found that there were 2 different styles of blocks made. A wide base and the narrow or straight base (cub style). But the wide base can be easily modified into a narrow base.
For the oil pans there are several different ones. The wide and narrow. Then there are cast iron and aluminum versions of both. Then there are the shallow 1 quart and the deep 1-1/2 quart pans. The wide base pans will not work in a cub ( atleast on mine).
But really all I was looking for was the difference in blocks. The 12 horse in my 1211 is nearing time for a freshen, and I am going to use either a 14 or 16 hp block to do it. The cranks are the same for the 12-14-16-18 hp, as far as stroke and bearing surfaces go. So if I go to the 14,all I need is a 14 horse rebuild kit,and a cam.I would probly go with a 16hp cam. And if I decide to spend the high dollars on a 16 hp block,I would need a rebuild kit, cam, and head.
All the blocks can be used with electronic ignition, but only the older blocks were made to accept the points style. I will probly try to do allot of the same things that were done on the KILLER KOHLER build. Only on a 14 or 16 hp instead.
The web site mentioned in a post above, doese a very good job explaining all this.
