Here's my take:
1960s-70s Garden tractors were made to be tractors, and tractors at that time get the job done efficiently because they were slower; farming was slower.
Todays world is GO GO GO GO GO GO GO %1000 of the time and (most) people don't want slow and effective, they want fast and effective.
I'll take slow. I don't need my driveway plowed or my grass cut at Richard Petty speed. I also think it has to do with better torque of the old machines.
