My first question is: If you don't know if the points are working/have power to them... How do you know they are set right?

I agree, this is the fastest and easiest way to make it run.
The fastest way to find out if there is power going to the coil is; connect your test light to the neg battery post and touch the point to the positive side of the coil and turn the key to the "run" position (the light should come on).
To see if the points are making contact; connect the clip on your test light to the neg battery post and touch the point to the neg side of the coil and crank the engine over, if the points are working the light will go off when the points make contact and on when they are open.
