I THINK Dvog nailed it!
Had some time last night and wanted to do a little checking on the little engine.
I compared the lateral movement of the crank in this engine with the one in our puller. There was a LOT more play in it than the other. I always find enjoyment in cleaning up stuff as I "fix" em, so I pulled the flywheel and bearing plate and removed one of the shims (gaskets) from under the plate. When I fired it up, the sound was gone! Well, except for the grinding from the bearing on the driveshaft.
Pulled it apart and was amazed how worn the shaft was. That will be the NEXT item on the list. Planning on just building a new shaft and giving the ol girl a new bearing in the process.
