thanks guys i got it by taking the left rear tire off so i could reach the back and front of the bar and hooking the two together right in front of the rear end first. then after cotter key was installed with needle nose i was able to slide up the rest of the way and then install as normal. i left the ratchet in but maybe should have removed instead?
anyway i figured there was no magic answer just seemed weird how in a hydro it takes 10 minutes and in a gear drive more like 45! grrrr.
i guess ill appreciate it more now lol
