What kind of stuff is it? It looks like metal filings to me, but I can't tell fom the picture. Is it grainy or more like mud?

I would think that diesel would be OK to use to clean it out and not hurt the seals. If you had a recirculating parts washer going into the rear end, then a filter screen across a bucket so that the fluid would flow back into the bucket, and pouring it back into the washer might be handy.

I'd try to jack up the rear, wash a lot, then turn the gears a little, wash a lot, and keep turning and washing til it is clean.
