Default Modified 82

Pete240: From what I understand, the only difference between a 782 and a 682 is the fact that the 782 had hydraulic lift. The red axles indicates IH manufacture (versus MTD/CCC), and you can verify by the serial number. I know that the aluminum rear went in and the wiring changed at S/N 719,999. The aluminum rear has a different number of bolts, I think, but it sounds like you know that.

It could have had dual ports on it, in which case, the model# would technically be 784, but the red tractors did not distinguish the dual hydraulics with a decal on the hood; apparently, the yellow and white ones did, at least on the invoice, I'm told.

The hydraulic lift, with dual ports, could have been added to a 682 later, the pump for the hydrostatic, though, would need to have been ported. So it would not have been easy to upgrade a 682 to a "784," but it can be done. If the fellow you're buying it from performed the modifications, he should be able to tell you all about it; if he didn't perform the modifications himself, or he is getting MUCH older and forgetful, he could simply be confused as to what he actually has.

As far as I know, the hydrostatic pump can handle the lift and the power-angle; that is why they were installed in the first place. I would like to hear from someone who has a power-angle or loader installed on their tractor.

Edit: Also, you're right, both the 682 and 782 came from the factory with the KT17 motor installed, first series I and then Series II: the M18 didn't come out until the 1810/1811 etc.
