Cub Cadets have a Starter / Generator, not a Starter / Alternator.

A generator produces a DC Voltage. A alternator produces a AC Voltage.

From the previous link. there is two (2) tests to perform. One is a static test where one measures resistance on the stator coil. The second is a "performance test" where one measures the voltages while the engine is running at WOT.

Voltage from the stator is around 30VAC. Voltage from the center tap of the V/R to chassis ground is 13.7VDC.
