I am not a perfectionist, and so, I have never seen a need to adjust the valves on any small engine I have owned.

I have had some form of Cub Cadet since 1981, I still own the engine out of the first one I ever bought.

My 1974 Toyota Corolla owners manual said I had to adjust the valves.

I drove it 3 times the number of miles that valve adjustment was recommended without removing the valve cover, that car would get 47 miles to the gallon when I traded it in.

I think part of the reason valve adjustment is recommended is to check that nothing unusual has happened.
