Default 100 steering box repair

I am more than 1/2 way done redoing my '64 100. Yesterday I took apart the steering box and cleaned up all the old grease and all of the parts. I got looking at my manual and noticed there were no ball bearing retainer snap rings or gasket or seal on the gear box. The hole in the bottom for the grease zerk had no zerk and was packed solid with mud and grease. I ran a tap down into the hole, and Eureka, there were threads in there. Now there is a zerk in there. I've been searching the internet trying to find these snap rings, but have had no luck. Since there were none in there, and it worked, do you think I really need them? I probably do, but don't know where to find them. Any help or info would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks, Mike
