The picture you posted of the rear is not one on a 582 Special.The cast one shown would be a 582,unless it was changed in it's lifetime.Does the hood have a 582 Special decal?There is no breather on a gear drive,the water prolly got in through the shifter.The 124 I just picked up has a froze up rear too,waiting for my block heater to come in the mail to defrost it,then I will do what you did.
