1650 running problems

I've been having the problem for a long time, like since last year. our 1650, was running slow. I adjusted the position of the throttle cable, and now it don't run so slow. at an eight throttle (thats the actual position on the carb) it runs away. it just picks up RPM until you shut off. I believe it has hit 4000RPM. I thought that I might have a carb problem, but, I put a freshly rebuilt carb (off another 16hp) on it, and I still have the same problem. anybody know what might be going on?

Reset your governor as per the service manual, then tell us if it still does it. I bet the arm slipped on the cross shaft. Put the cable back where it was, too.

check and check. I did that a long time ago, and it didn't help a bit. the throttle only opens like, a half centimeter(between the stop flange on the top of the throttle shaft, and the idle set screw), before it runs away. I don't know what else might cause this problem. from idle though, if you shut it off, it hits the compression stroke, and turns the other way, shooting a lot of gas out the carb

Is the governor gear still in the engine, in place, and in one piece? That would be the next thing to verify. Is the pin that holds the governor in loose? (It's the phillips screw to the right of the cross shaft/lever arm)

The governor is still intact, and working, but I don't think thats the problem. I know that the carb is supposed to be able to run at wide open, but this one barely gets past idle. I think the throttle is in a position to close to idle for the governor to work. is there any way that the engine could be getting gas, other than from the main circuts?

Is the throttle cable connected correctly, and is the governor spring in the correct holes? High speed stop in the linkage intact? I think you have some kind of linkage problem. I don't understand what you mean by "this one barely gets past idle." Make sure that the butterfly valve in the carb has full travel.

If there was, this would have nothing to do with the problem. The mixture would be too rich and it would flood and run horribly.

A picture of the governor and carb linkage would be extremely helpful. Part of the issue here is you changed the location of the throttle cable slightly.

the butterfly has full travel. what I mean by "this one barely gets past idle, is that, through the full 90degree range of motion of the throttle shaft, if you open the throttle about 10 degrees, the engine runs away. you can't go any further past that, or it runs to rich, and the catches itself, and is gone to way to high of RPM's. I'll try and take a video of it, but right now I think I have a couple pics. I'll be a while before I get them on though. I have to go and move cows for the afternoon. (its just after 1 here now) Thanks for your help Matt!

I'm on Matt's side. If your govenor was working, it wouldn't be doing what you claim it is doing. The whole job of a govenor is to keep it from over reving. Your's is over reving so it just sounds too much like your govenor is the problem. Just my 2 cents.

OK, and how hard is that to replace?

Matt G. 06-25-2009 07:07 PM

To replace the governor you have to pull the whole motor apart. It's the last thing out and the first thing back in when you disassemble/reassemble. Before you do that, please post a picture of your linkage so we can try to see what's going on. You should also reset the governor arm one more time in case it slipped. You could also remove the cam cover and reach up in there and see if the weights are stuck. Don't tear it down until you eliminate all the other options.
