New guy looking at a 102
Hello there,
I am looking at a cadet 102 It seems to run well, with no smoke, started with the starter/generator. Has some rust here and there but looks sound. Has the creeper gear. Original hard rubber seat looks uncracked. The deck operated, it looks a bit rusty, but spins and doesn't make too much noise. Steering has a bit of slop, but looks to be mostly at the tie rods. Front wheel bearings need replacing. The seller is firm at $300 I was wondering if there are things I should be looking for one this model, as this will be my first cadet? I know the value is somewhat subjective, and also affected by area, so not really wondering about price. Just curious what little things to look for when shopping for these. My hopes are to use this at the hunting shack, mowing my well groomed trails, then maybe doing a restore during the winter. Thanks, Jim |
Jim :Welcome2:
For $300 with a deck I would buy it. :WWP: When you go get it.:biggrin2: |
It sounds like a good price with the creeper and original seat, plus it runs good. Some pictures would be helpful, but even if it is rough thats a decent deal.A few things to check, drive it around an make sure none of the gears pop out,the creeper in high and low too.It seems you have checked the rest of the normal stuff. Get us some pictures and it would be a little more easy for us to tell you.:beerchug:

I think $300 is a great price, 2 weeks ago I bought a 102 for $150 that needs alot of work, like mentioned above pictures would be nice.

Sounds like a good deal to me, as well.

Friar_Tuck I think I would pounce on that deal. Creeper and seat are worth that money.:beerchug:

Go back and test drive it like others have mentioned, checking operation of the clutch and all the gears. I have a recently acquired 149, it runs great, no smoke, however, when you pull the dip stick while it is idling, it has severe blow by, I am surprised the dip stick stays in it and it uses a considerable amount of oil. I am guessing it has rings stuck, you would never guess it consumes oil as badly as it does, there is no hint of smoke from idle to full throttle I am planning on a full restore including the engine overhaul while it's apart, so it was not that big of deal to me, everything else works as intended and the hydraulics work great with no leaks.
I think for $300 it is a good deal, even if it acts like mine does, I would still try to buy it, of course that would be a point to Jew him on. |
