Differential question

On a manual trans. older CC, if there is some oil leakage showing around the bottom of the differential / rear axle area, what would be the likely cause, and how big of a repair job would it be? Thanks in advance.

Well I was wondering in general, because I'm still shopping around, but I'm mostly talking about the 1970s wide frame 10 or 12 HP manual shift models.
