list of Super Cubs, etc...

OK, I have become very interested in the Super Cubs so I want to understand more about them. If there is a book or website, etc.. that lists all of the info on each one I would like to know about it. Otherwise, I hope you can help me with general info on the models, what is good and bad on each model. What year did they start the Supers and when did it end, or is it still going on?

First question is are all Supers basically the same physical size?

In my previous post I was looking at a 2082. I learned from that exchange that the rear end in it is cast aluminum not good but the power steering and deck is good. Plastic is bad, got that. '

Scott pointed me in the direction of an 1872, but nothing was said about what it is. Does this one have the cast iron rear end? Is it all sheet metal? I assume they are 18hp. Was power steering standard on these?

Is the 982 considered a Super?

Will the 3 pt lift from any cub work on these or does it have to be for a Super?

What other models should I be looking for? As far as the plastic goes, I can live with that if the tractor is well built. As Scott mentioned, I can always change over tin.
I am just trying to come up with something that can be put to work right away and work on it along the way. I don't have the luxury of running all over the country picking up parts tractors and putting one together, as much as I would love to. I can however make one big trip for the right tractor.
I guess what would be nice is to have a list compiled of good tractors with their week points pointed out. If it us junk, it's not worth mentioning. It would also be interesting to see different views on some of these tractors.

I will be honest, I do use my equipment to the max. I take care of it but I will use it.

Looking forward to what you have to say.

IH-built 982 is the only one with an iron rear. Everything else will have an aluminum rear, which isn't the end of the world. A 982 is a super. All the models I can think of are:

982, 984, 986, 1912, 1914, 1572, 1772, 1872, 2072, 1882, 2082, 2086, 2084, 2284. I might have made up the 2084...I'm not sure...

IH-built 982s have an iron rear, Onan 20 hp engine, and optional turning brakes, 3-point, rear PTO etc. No power steering. MTD built 982s have an aluminum rear with the same options. The 984 and 986 have some combination of 3-point or rear PTO but the only difference between them and the 982 is the serial number tag. This was MTD's strange numbering in my opinion. IH 982s were red, MTD built ones were either red or yellow and white.

The 1912 and 1914 are basically identical to the 982 except for paint and decals. Once again, the 1914 has a 3-point or something standard.

1572 and 1772 are diesels, 15 and 17 hp, respectively. Standard turning brakes and power steering. 1872 and 2072 have Kohler 18 hp and 20 hp engines, same everything else as 1572 and 1772. Early 2072s still have an Onan.

Until this point, all of these have identical sheetmetal. After came the 'cyclops' series with the plastic crap.

1882 and 2082 are basically an 1872 and 2072 with plastic body panels and different fenders. The frame, 3-point, etc. is the same as previous models.

2084 and 2284 are basically the same as the 1882 and 2082 with V-twin Kohler command engines of 20 and 22 hp, respectively.

2086 has a 20 hp liquid-cooled kawasaki...everything else is same as other cyclops tractors.

The super 3-point is specific to the supers due to the provision for the rear PTO.

Chip:

The first Cub Cadet SGT was the IH 982. That was developed in 1979.

When IH sold out in 1980, CCC kept on producing the 982 with other options, ie: Rear PTO and CAT 0 Hitch, and or both (982, 984, & 986)

Then came the 1912 & 1914. After that it was the 1872 and 2072 and that took the model offerings into the late 80's.

The only model that had the Cast Iron Rear Rear was the IH 982. Cast Iron rear end stayed until serial number 719,999.

At serial 720,000 the Aluminum Rear Ends are introduced and other changes.

Since I do not own a SGT (but would like a IH 982), other members can comment on subsequent models, and the pros and cons.

I would love to have an IH-built 982, but I've also looked pretty hard at some 1872s and 2072s. Onan parts are expensive.

I am not a big fan of all the plastic crap on the cyclops tractors. In addition to that, the wiring is horrible, as is the paint. A lot of those are pretty rusty as well.

Great info. So, is the 782 considered a Super?
As far as Onans I have never owned one but have never heard any good said about them.
Please clarify CC and CCC. What does CCC stand for? I know CC was bought by MTD, so is this in reference to this? Just trying to learn the jargon.
I do appreciate the help here. I have owned several Cubs in my life but never really got into the history, models, production, restoring, etc.... just used them to do my work and have always enjoyed them. I know it is obvious but just thought I would be upfront so some of my questions will be understood.

Cub149..there is a lot of info out there..Google is your friend..also Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet by Kenneth Updike is a good read..I just picked up a 982 and had many questions, since this my first red tractor..have managed to find an engine and parts manual, only lacking a service manual..it bothers me that everyone dislikes the Onan engine, but time will tell..:IH Trusted Hand::American Flag 1:

in that respect Onans SUCK!!!!!!!!
NOT everyone hates Onans.
The only negative that I have ever heard or read was that Manuals and Parts are a little difficult to obtain and that parts are expensive.

I have never heard any negative on Onan's quality or reliability.

I have an 1882 with 3 point, FEL, and wheel weights and I love it. It has moved stuff around, plowed and tilled my garden, mowed my 2 acres and still has power to spare. But I have to agree with Matt, the plastic hood makes it kind of cheesy IMO. But, I still love it!!;)

I would suggest not getting a super unless it has some options on it like dual turning brakes, power steering etc... otherwise whats the point if you already have a GT
