Just bought a 2284 any suggestions/advice
New to the forum so if this is in the wrong place let me know. I just bought a Cub 2284 and I would like any advice or suggestions other owners have on this model. I know nobody likes the plastic cubs but I dont mind as it is an awesome looking tractor even with plastic. I checked the rear end bolts because I read they were trouble in the aluminum housing. The hydro pump seems loud to me. I am gonna change all the filter/fluids in the whole tractor. Thanks for all the info and the great forum.

If your talking about a loud whining noise coming from the pump its probably normal and will quiet down as the fluid gets hot but your doing a good thing anyway by changing the fluid and filter since PO's are notorious for neglecting their cubs.

The fluid and filter change really quietened it down but I think the parking brake is out of adjustment. It wont hold the tractor at all and seems to pull the direction lever over to far and it makes the tractor want to ease forward. The amp light started coming on when the deck is engaged so I have to figure that out. Giving the carb a set of new o rings and gaskets and a new fuel lines. Want to get it in tip top shape.

I have a 2284 that I bought several years ago. The only thing that I have had to do to it other than routine maintenance is to change the coils on the engine. This is a tough rig. The turning brakes really help out with mowing and moving snow. They don't make them like this any more.
Good luck with it. |
The parking brake/lever centering are separate issues. The brakes can be easily adjusted if you have wear left on the pads. Do you have an owners manual? It details how to adjust them, you'll see pretty quick if you can get them to hold.
I haven't adjusted the way the brakes center the speed lever, has to be an easy adjustment. If it isn't obvious when you look I'll take a look at mine to see how it works, or check my manual. |
I havent bought a manual yet. Ive looked at several online trying to find a good deal. The tractor is in great shape overall just has those few minor issues. The amp light worries me the most because electrical problems can be nightmares. Thanks for offering to help. Talking to another owner is the best way to find out good info on what works.

You shouldn't have to buy an owners manual. They are available to download for free from the cub cadet web site. Then you can print a copy if you want to.

Thanks I found were you were talking about on the cub cadet sight. Now if I could just locate my serial number. The number I thought it was is wrong. Were is it on the tractor? Im over looking it I guess.

You'll find the owner's manual online, but the service manual has to be purchased. Either your electric pto is drawing too much current or you've got a charging problem. With the tractor off but key on, engage/disengage the pto, you should hear a solid thump as it engages (remember that if your safety switches are still in place you'll need to be in the seat). I know they go bad but have never had it happen to me, not sure what you would look for. Another thought - with it running, turn on the headlights and see if the amp light goes on with that draw. |
