682 12 in plow
 

I have a chance to get a 12 in plow and was wondering if my 682 would pull it or should I look for a 10 in. Most of the ground I would plow is spotty sod and never been broken before. Thanks for your help.

I've pull a 12 inch plow with my 122 (now Allen's 122) with a 10hp in it no problems at all. It's pulled it well with the Carolina red clay we've got here. I don't see why your 682 would have a problem with a 12 inch plow. Make sure you have AG tires and I like to have mine loaded and I use wheel weights too. With loaded tires I've got 80 lbs per tire plus 35 lbs per sears wheel weights for a grand total of 230 lbs.

Where in IL are you? If you have the rock-hard dirt that central and northern Illinois have, you may want to consider the 10" plow. A 682 will have no problem, power wise, pulling a 12" plow, but you will need more weight to do so than you would for a 10" plow. The condition of the plow would be another factor; a plow with a clean, shiny moldboard will pull easier than one with a rusty moldboard. A rusty one will eventually clean up, but it'll take awhile and pull harder until it is clean. If the 12" plow is in good condition and you've got plenty of wheel weights, I'd go for it.

I would say if the price is right get it and try it. You can always sell or trade it off later if you don't like it. :buttrock:

Is the plow a Brinly plow?
Is this a sleeve hitch plow or a 3 point plow?

Soil condiations and the type of soil makes a huge difference as Matt said. I would find a 10 inch plow since you are planning to plow soil that is sod and never plow. Biggest problem you will have is traction. You will need a good set of ag tires and plenty of weight. I wouldn't use a Cub Cadet that has an aluminum rear end housing on a sleeve hitch plow.


Yes a 10 horse power Cub can pull the plow in soil that was worked before. Hydro trans take 10% to 20% of the tractor's power just to run the hydro pump. There are adjustments you can do to a Brinly plow to make it take a narrower cut. A good shine on the moldboard and a sharp coulter helps to make the plow pull easier.

I will be plowing in pittsfield. The plow would go on a sleeve hitch with cast iron rear end. I guess fluid filled carlisle tru powers and my 200# body won't be enough?

in sandy soil my 169 only had 75 pounds per tire and me being 160 pounds. it didnt struggle one bit.
