just loosened the jam nut and tightened down the follower stud a bit and buttoned everything back up, worked for a few minutes but is still 1 1/2 to 2 turns loose, is there a worm gear or something inside that needs to be replaced?

Might be bad bearings, but you could try tightening the plug in the bottom. Is there axial play in the steering shaft? If so, tightening the plug will help. This is all described in detail in the service manual...
Oh, and if the follower stud is really worn, turning it in another turn isn't going to do anything. You could try turning it 90 degrees from its current position to see if it's still that loose. That might allow it to ride on an unworn part of the cam follower which would tighten it up. Most likely though, the follower is pretty worn out. I pull the column and see what's going on. Wait...when you say "1 1/2 to 2 turns loose" do you mean the steering wheel turns 1 1/2 to 2 turns before steering the wheels, or do you mean something else? |
yeah, when i turn the wheel, it has 1 1/2 to 2 turns before the wheels start to turn and the axel moves as well, i took the follower pin out and cleaned it up, put it back in with no progress, when you say bottom bolt do you mean the one that is slotted of the bottom of the box?
|
2 turns? That doesn't make any sense...it should only have 2 turns lock-to-lock. Can you steer at all? I wonder if there's anything left of the follower pin.
It's not a bolt, it's a big threaded plug. I'll say it again, it's time to grab the service manual and start reading. Either way, the column needs to come out and be disassembled. No amount of adjustment is going to fix it if it's really doing what you say it is. |
so i pulled the mule drive and the plug was almost totally backed out, no cotter pin, tightened it down and she turns great!!! Cotter pin in pivot pin was broke, pin backed out, will replace tonite and she will be like new, thanks for all your help guys!!!!:beerchug:

Tubby I think you got your terminology wrong. The mule drive it the bracket on the front of your tractor that has 2 pulleys and turns the PTO belt 90 degress so it can reach the deck.
But, glad you got your column working. Happy Cubbing, AJ |
aj,
what i meant to say was that i pulled off the mule drive and deck so that i could get to the steering box. i was typing in a hurry at work and left some words out, sorry. thanks Tubby |
