Measuring RPM's
:bigthink: Forgive me for sounding dumb...what tool do you guys use to check rpm of motors? Bear in mind, I have basic tool set in my garage, hammer, sockets, flat wrenches, screwdrivers. :biggrin2.gif: So what do I need to buy to do this??

I was going to get something like this for that purpose. I just need the spare money (college bill and car that has a trans problem are very costly). It has good reviews and will work on almost anything, just remember that the item being measured can't be too shiny except for one spot, otherwise it will give a false reading.

Do NOT use your fingers! It don't work very well..:biggrin2.gif:
But seriously, any kind of small digital tach should work. if you have a hobby shop in your area, try and see if they have one , norm about $20 (US).. |
i agree jay its hard to count that fast LMAO1:

I have an old dwell meter that I used to use on my cars back when I didn't need a computer to work on them. Have not tried it on a single cylinder Kohler but does anyone know if it would work? There is a tachometer reading on it.

In the same boat Weaverama. I have a Craftsman Engine Analyzer like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...5015&viewitem= that I used for tune ups. It only has settings for 4-6-8 cylinder engines, and I haven't looked closely enough to see how or if it will work on single/2 cylinder engines. I use a Sendec tach/hour meter on my 982.

I'll have to see if this works or not but I just ordered one of these Tach & Hr Meter

Got looking today on line....found this one. Anyone have any thoughts on it or is it TOO Cheap - possibly not accurate?
