Automatic compression release woes
 

I tried to turn it over the motor today and the ACR appears not to be working tried a different battery still the same issues. So I will check the valve adjustment before pulling the engine AGAIN.

The spring may have come unhooked "if" I am lucky. Does anybody have a picture of a cam with the spring the way it should be? I looked at the motor manual and I am have a hard time figuring out what is hooked and unhooked.

I had the same issue this winter too,but after checking the timing,cleaning the points and setting the valves it turned out to be the starter,so you may also want check that if it turns and stops at TDC and then creeps past.When you check your valve adjustment you can see if the ARC is working if the left valve moves up a little on the compression stroke.

You didn't say what engine but you can take the cam cover off when the engine is still in the tractor to see if the spring is attached. I've also unbolted the engine and jack up a little to get clearance to reattach the spring. Yes you have to unbolt the engine but it dosen't have to come out if the spring is just unhooked.

when put my shortblock back together the spring was missing. i took the spring off a k241 cam i had laying around. im guessing the spring returns the acr to starting condition

Thanks to everybody who replied after some head scratching I did the valve lash again and took off the head to make sure the piston was where it should be, the marks are right, and the exhaust valve pops up now on the compression stroke a little bit then closes. It save me pulling the engine again and cost me a head gasket, a small price to pay but now it is working as it should.
