Cub Cadet Original Hand Start.
 

Hi,

few Weeks ago, i saw a 3 Digit Cub Cadet Original in US Ebay. This "O" had a Hand Start Pulley, and no Electric Starter Generator.
My "O" have Electric, but them all damaged, and so, i think, it can be intresting, to make a Hand Starter.

Does someone have Pics from a Hand Start Cub, and need this Tractor a Battery for Work?

I contacted the Seller from the Cub in Ebay too, and i hope for help from him, and yours.

The Hand Start Cubs have a different ignition system. They have a magneto ignition. The electric start Cubs have a battery ignition system. Magneto type systems are hard to find.

I would agree with Dale (Merk), I think it would be easier to find lost, missing or damaged Electric Start Parts ......than to find the parts for the hand start or Pull Start Ignition System.

I understand the mag type ignition Vs. Gen-starter type engines for the early Cub Cadet engines. I.E the 7hp Kohler

Q.1 If the battery is low on the starter models will the engine not throttle up?


Q.2 Once started, can you test the charging system by removing the positive cable to see if the engine will die?

Q.3 Why use the 2 different ignition types?

I'll give your questions a shot and others may reply also

(A-1) Once the motor is started, the ignition system should have no effect on throttling up.

(A-2) If the motor is running and you remove the battery cable, the motor will definitely stop.

(A-3) Couple of reason, the Magneto system is Cheaper to offer than the S/G system. Next, would be the ease of starting the motor using the S/G system, and lastly.....lighting.

Ok I'm still fairly new to the lawn tractor game.
Using what I know as reference....
In 1975 I had an AMF Harley Davidson 65cc motorcycle.
The bike did not have a battery but did have a headlight.
Not sure how this works.

I have a recoil Original (#950). It's a cool thing to have but not something you'd want to give major use to. It typically doesn't fire as hot and has to be set absolutely perfect as far as the carb and points/plug to run good. Also, the recoil rope part that bolts to the motor and the magneto are NLA parts. You can make the 8hp backing plate and magneto work if you wanted. Also, you'd need a different flywheel which I don't know is available. It'll actually be cheaper to go back to electric probably even if you could find the recoil parts somewhere NOS or used.
Here's a pic after restoration before the fenders and 3 pt was on. Also has the front pto.

thanks for the Informations, now, i know something more about it. I think it's better to make the S/G System ready.

Think, i will start to restore the "O" in the next Time, it must be ready in August, for the big european IH and Case IH Meeting, here in Germany.

What Type of Battery need the "O"?

My "O" brakes only at the left Side, is this OK?

ksanders, that is a great looking original w/recoil. is it still operable? i too have the same set up, but most of the time i use a rope around the pulley. and since i've used it a few times for yard duty, it no longer has that showroom beauty. i'm thinking of letting that engine go and replacing it with an k181. the k161 still runs, but getting it going in the snow is downright dangerous. last year, i was laid up for a week because my foot slipped off the tractor while attempting to start it and wound up on my back. the tractor did start, but there wasn't anyone to ride it.

This tractor is fully operational and would probably start first pull right now if I wanted. Since restoring it, I don't do much with it. I rebuilt the deck but haven't used it because I have 9 other mowers that I feel a lot better about getting dirty. I have pushed a little snow with the non-trip blade and use it to pull a grass sweeper and misc stuff like that. I really like the whole "not needing a battery" anytime you want to use it though.

georg, the Originals only had brakes on the left side anyway. That's normal and usually stops the tractor just fine. Just keep it in mind before going downhill with a big trailer of stuff or something because that wheel can and will slide. Any lawn and garden battery will turn the motor over on those little things as long as the SG is working right. I usually go with a higher CA battery just for luxury, but the small ones do just fine.
