682 coil problems

So I went to fire up my tractor to get it ready for winter (yeah I'm running a little behind) and it it wouldn't start up. So I started with the basics, fuel, spark, etc. Anyways, when checking for spark, I found that I'm only getting spark from one side of the coil. I would like to verify if its the coil before I go buy another. I found this post about testing the coil but not sure if this applys to a coil for a twin(http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11). Also, the cheapest coil I have found is around $100. Does anyone know of cheaper place to buy or an alternative from a different application? By the way, my tractor is a 682 with the KT17 Series II. Thanks.

Anyone have any suggestions/ideas? We are looking at 8"+ snow in the next couple of days so I need to get the tractor running!

Here's a better coil....scroll about half way down..

Not overly sure about the points saver but will be switching to this coil in spring..

looks like a pretty reasonable price compared to what I have found so far. If I end up needing the coil, I might try that out. However, the coil pictures might pose some mounting issues.

The 682 has a "dual" ignition coil. See this link for a simplified circuit...... Ign Circuit

Go to this link and click on the Tab. Once opened up, look at Page 32.... KT-17

Thanks for those links, thats a big help. Didn't realize the manuals actually provide directions for diagnosing and fixing problems. I will be sure to check the manual first in the future.

This may sound like a stupid question, but does the KT17 have 1 or 2 breaker points?

The KT-17 has one set of points, just like the link on the "Ign Circuit" diagram.

In other words, it fires both plugs @ the same time as per Rolands schematic.
Usually when a coil only fires one plug, but not the other, the coil is bad, but remember you need to check the coil -to- plug wires as well as the spark plug could be bad.

It also might be noted I have found that a weak/marginal battery can cause a no spark condition on one plug while cranking, as all the power is being used for the starter with little left for a marginal/weak coil to fire both plugs.

I figured there was just the one set of points but just wanted to make sure. So it eliminates that as a possibility.

I have checked the plug wires already and replaced them due to error on my part. Also, I have been using the same plug for testing so I assume thats not the issue either.

I am going to look into the weak battery issue. The motor is rolling over ok, but the day it didn't start, I noticed it didn't have the kick it usually does. I didn't really give it much thought because it was rolling over.

Thanks for the help guys. I have some things to check now.
