Steering box seal - how to?

Do you guys use rtv or anything to stick the steering box seal retainer and to the box? The manual just says to tighten the adjusting nut sufficiently to provide good seal compression. No mention of whether the seal just stays in place by compression or whether it's stuck there with gasket cement or something.

It can't go anywhere because of the metal seal retainer.

Tony,
I think you read it, as I would interpret it. On a thread or post somewhere I recall them saying to tighten until the seal starts compressing?? and that holds it in the retaining plate. I'm sure someone else will shine more light on the procedure. Good luck.

Ok. I guess the compression is sufficient to keep the grease from running out when it gets hot and thin. I'll give it a try with out any rtv. I guess I can always change it later if it starts getting grease all over.

Thanks for the input.

The best thing you can do is straighten the 1/4" thick plate so it is square to the welded in bolt, and flat. Maybe even a tad of bow the other way if you're brave.
This takes a press. It can be done with a very heavy vise, but it's very abusive to the vise (and I missed out on a sweet deal on a press, darn it!).
Happy steering building!
