The Yellow Fever

Well, I never thought I'd fall prey to it, but I did. A couple weeks ago I was looking around on criagslist like i always do just to see the deals out there, and I ran across an add in Nashville, TN for a 124 with no engine and an unidentified wideframe that the guy said had a hydro and either a 10 or 12 HP kohler and a couple decks. I called the guy and he said the almost complete tractor was missing some parts, like the air cleaner and the starter didn't work, but for $175 I figured the both would be worth it, if the wide frame turned out to be too far gone I'd just part it out to fund the rebuild of my 123. So I made the trip and loaded the tractors up and when I got home I started taking a closer look. Now i knew that the almost complete tractor had to be either a 1250 or a 1450, because it had a hydraulic lift and was just a quietline missing the side panels. I at least think there were 1250's with hydraulic lifts. The only way I could find to tell the difference between a 1250 and a 1450 or 1650 would be the carburetor either a #26 or a #30. Turns out, it was a #30. I got pretty excited because I knew it was at least a 1450 then, and possibly a 1650. So I also found that the 1650's engine (K341) has 10 head bolts rather than 9 that are on the k321. So I opened the hood, and to my surprise it had 10 head bolts! So I now own a 1650 almost complete tractor. I'm going to slowly work on getting it running. Here is pictures and video of my total haul:

124 - I'm going to use the fenders off of it on my 123, and probably some other parts

1650 - I'm gonna get her running and make her into a daily driver

44" deck - also got another one just like it except with a lot more rust and holes in it, will use it to make 1 complete 44" deck, which I am almost positive will fit on the 1650, can anyone confirm that?

42" Deck - I hope this one will fit on the 123, not positive, though. It needs a good bit of work, including a couple holes patched. I don't know how to weld, so I will either learn how or find a friend who can. Hopefully that friend will teach me how.

That first deck will fit the 1650. I have one just like it...in need of restoration.

thenrie,

Thanks for the info. Once I get the complete deck put together I'll post the parts I have left over from the other one and if you need any of them let me know and we'll work out a cheap deal.

Mine looks a lot worse than it actually is, I think. The spindles seem to be free and smooth, but the body has a lot of rust and the skids on the sides are shot. I think I'll replace the skids with wheels. There are kits available for that. I think a strip and paint job will have mine in good shape, but, all the same, keep me in mind if you end up parting that 1450 or deck out. I am looking around locally for a fender pan for my 1650. Shipping might be prohibitively expensive for that part.

Found my 1650 broken down in the woods at a house I bought. I found the deck a few weeks later, laying covered in trash and weeds in another part of the property. Hope to have it cutting grass next spring.
