1650 rebuilt engine problems
Just had a machinist re-bore .030 over on my 1650. He set piston, connecting rod, and crank. He also put new throttle shaft in carb. I put rest of motor back together and put in tractor. Set governor and carb quarter turn past settings according to manual. Ran on and off for awhile. Let it cool & re-torqued head bolts. Motor running pretty good and started cutting grass. Smoke coming from carb area. Tractor stalls out in middle of cut on slight slope. Kinda hard to restart but turns over okay. Let it sit for 5 minutes, & starts back up. Take it to the garage and go to pull plug to look at coming out, kinda hard stripped a couple threads out of cylinder head. If it wasn't for bad luck wouldn't have any at all. Any comments or suggestions appreciated.

Buy this and replace, + cost of gasket. Stick your plug back in if you can and run it till you get time to swap out. By the time you heilicoil or go back to the machinist to see if he can fix it you can just replace it. Scott |
You don't elaborate on it, but the smoke coming from the Carb area may have something to do with the Breather Assembly.
I personally have heli-coiled a head before and had good success. But if a good replacement was at hand, I would think about that also. |
Helicoil the head it will last forever if you do it right. JMD

I thought about the breather assembly, does anyone have a picture of the assembly, if put together out of order would that cause smoking and hopefully not engine damage?

I agree with R Bedell. You say your machinist did the piston work. Was any valve work done on it. Improper valve adjustment or worn valves will cause smoke to come out of the crank case breather which will look like smoke coming from the carb area.

Okay got a tap cleaned plug threads talked to machinest he said might have got to hot from working new piston rings to hard before they got seated possibly stuck a valve and yes he replaced one valve and cleaned up seats . He said go ahead and run engine at lower throttle speed for an hour, so I did and so far no problems. Don,t know if I have carb set right though, on a cold start it starts right up using choke, after warmed up and restarting it's hard to restart, usually 3or 4 trys with a little choke. puff of smoke shot out of airbox on warm restart.
Thanks again, Tim |
