Came across a good deal on a red cub cadet 382, cant find much info on this model so far, where they made by IH? Is this a garden tractor? Newbi here so sorry for obvious questions,

Some were made by IH. It has a vertical shaft engine and is a lawn tractor.

So what is the model numbers for the hydro vs the gear models? I know a 382 was an 11hp and the 282 was an 8.....but was there a difference in model numbers between hydro and gear models? What determined what colours they were? Depending on if sold at an IH dealer or a Cub dealer? :bigthink:

The color thing is for the same reason as the yellow/white vs. red garden tractors. The 382 is a gear drive, and the 382 Hydro is a hydro. That's how they differentiated between the two.

Nope...383 was an MTD thing; it's their name for the 382 Hydro.

Why would there be two shades of red? The owner says it doesn't look like the body has been painted, he bought it this way supposedly. Is there another tractor that would be similar in shape that is could just have had a 382 Hydro hood put onto it? Wouldn't want to get burnt by driving all the way to see it and find out its some breed of MTD crap!

Any thoughts? :bigthink:

You have one of these don't you Matt? How do you like it? Anyone else have any comments about them - like and dislikes? I know its a LT - besides that.

My guess is the original hood broke and someone replaced it with one from a tractor that sat outside all of its life. That hood is the same color, just really faded.

We have one that's on it's second engine and has cut a lot of grass. The deck has been rebuilt 2 or 3 times and patched, and the trans had to have 90wt put in it to keep it from slipping, but it's still going. It works fine for mowing, but I'm too tall for it. I like my GTs better.

I bought a Spirit of 76 a few years back, which is essentailly the same tractor. My sons and I started on it, but soon lost interest in favor of the GT's. For what it would cost to finish the SO76 to get it right, I could have my 782 running and operational again, so we moved on.

It sits in the barn waiting for the day I gain interest again.

These tractors are very light weight, but easy to work on. Parts seem to be getting more difficult to find, but I am working on an SO76, so that does make a difference.
