149 axle pivot pin
1 Attachment(s)
Sorry for the double post. I forgot how to use a forum ! I picked up this 1973 149 and am power washing and going thru some worn out steering bits. Does the axle pivot pin come out thru the front or does the engine have to come out to push it out to the rear ? Also having spent hours looking thru the forums I saw mention of closing up the C channel a bit to take out some slop. How do you do this ?

You will have to pull the engine to remove the pin from the rear as the oil pan is in the way. Good chance to do some housekeeping and who knows what else you may find there that needs attention.
Use a 3/4" hard bolt to squeeze the 'C' channel back to spec. |
Two of the four engine mounting bolts are up in the aforementioned "C" channel.
You have to jack up the front end and pivot he axle to one side, then the other to get at them. A ratcheting 9/16 box wrench will be your friend. Once you have the pin and axle out, inspect them for wear but don't overlook the pin bushings welded into the "C" channel, they wear too. Since you will have things that far apart you might as well pull out the steering column to clean, inspect the bearings, put in new grease and adjust the worm gears. Fun hey?? |

Good time to check the axle pin grease fitting that ism installed in the right side of the axle proper and make sure the passage is clear and will accept grease.

IH dealers should stock the 935 white. That's where I get mine including Hy-Tran for the hydros.

The fun is just beginning ! Honestly a well maintained 149. Not sure if I want it original or restore it.
