1863 - 1864 Trans noise?

I am looking at buying a 1863 ( 94 or 95) and am wondering what is an allowable or normal amount of trans noise. I drove an 1864 and that had noticeable whine in forward, some in reverse. Engine was blowing smoke so I walked away quickly from that one. Any wisdom out there?? New to CC and this forum THANKS

Cavitation..... could be in need of oil and filter change. Is the oil correct type, viscosity and at the right level? Maybe small leaks.
