Cub cadet 2182 with 3 cylinder engine
 

Hello,
I have a cub cadet 2182 with the 3 cylinder gas engine. It has always started and run great. This year, it starts up just fine, runs about 5 seconds and shuts off. Start it with choke, starts and runs 5 seconds. start it with choke, starts, close choke, and engine quits in about 5 seconds. Drained old fuel out, and same result. Any ideas?

Just because I'm easily confused, I have to ask for clarification:
When you say you "close" the choke, do you mean you are engaging the choke, closing off the air supply to the carburetor? When you say you "start it with the choke", do you mean that you are choking it to start it? IE: pulling it out?

When you pull the choke control, the choke plate closes off the carb air intake and the engine is choked, in normal parlance.

If it starts with the choke on, or closed, but dies when the choke is taken off, or opened, it often indicates an air leak somewhere between the carburetor and the intake of the engine. It could also indicate dirt in the carburetor.

I'm sure that others will know of other possibilities too.

Fuel supply likely blocked. Fuel filter, blockage in line or carburetor. Or fuel pump failing not working well.

With choke engaged, I mean choke plate closed, restricting air

there is a drain on the bowl, if you open it, it should have gas in the bowl, if not, if you remove the fuel line from the carb and turn the key on do you get fuel from the fuel line? if not is pump running, are both fuels shutoffs open, fuel filter not clogged?.
if you have gas in the bowl are you sure the cut off solenoid is working and not stuck shut?
I would start there as Billy-o stated this sounds like fuel delivery issue.

Fuel shut offs are open. I disconnected the fuel line from the carb and fuel shoots out that line when i crank it

My guess is that the fuel shut off solenoid on the bottom of the carb is sticking or it has failed. I removed them on the 2 2182's I had at one time. I remove the solenoid then I drill the bolt/ main jet that the solenoid mounts to for a 3/8" freeze plug. :beerchug:

Google "3/8" freeze plug" and pick one. Before you do that try just removing the solenoid and cutting the tip off then reinstall the solenoid to see if that cures the issue. Clean the main jet while you have it apart. The W600 is finicky when it comes to having a clean carb.

I imagine you could thread the hole and us a hex plug instead of a freeze plug which would allow you to easily drain the carb bowl without removing the carb.
