Continuing Starting Issue 236 original hours..

Excuse if this is a second post but I don't see the first one... 3184 CCadet, bought several years ago, occasionally had a click instead of engaging the starter. I replaced the battery, starter, checked wires, grounds, safety switches with negative results. Acts like a dead battery/bad solenoid but then on the next turn of the key it will start. Over the years it has gotten worse. The normal start procedure is get a pipe wrench and turn the shaft until it releases compression but even this takes several tries for it to work. I know nothing about compression releases but I don't hear anything clattering in the engine. I haven't adjusted the valves because of the relative low hours on the machine. Thoughts, ideas ?

Great machine when its running but I'm older and crankier and just want it to start. Retired, small pension can't afford to take it to a dealer for a fishing expedition. Thanks

I'm casting doubt that the engine ACR is your issue base on your description of click and then start. I could be wrong, but I suggest you go back over the connections and make sure it's all bright, clean and tight....especially that of the battery, solenoid and starter. I also would make sure the ground is great especially to the motor and not just the tractor frame wherever that ground cable connects. Sometime the battery cables can go bad at the eyelets and cable.

Now, if you think ACR is the issue, I would assume the engine would just turn over slowly and then stop rather than get the click you described.

Sounds like a common problem with the Kohler Commands. Below is a link to the easy cheap fix.

Not really a problem with the command engines, just the safety interlock switches that prevent people from doing something dumb. The safety circuit switches seem to become less conductive after many years, which is the cause of the problem.

The "fix" allows the relay to function with less voltage allowing the starter to fire up with full power from the direct battery connection to the relay contacts to engage the starter. Simple and effective.

If the relay doesn't work properly, you will need to check all safety interlock switches to improve their functionality. Replace them if necessary. :biggrin2:

I'll be only too happy to get a fix for around $ 10. Not expecting much since I've already jumped the newer battery I have in case it was an instance of a weak/dead cell masquerading as a good battery... I even load tested the battery and all was well.. but, happy to try.

I don't have any Fleet and Farm stores ( never heard of them in our area ) but I do have Tractor Supply within 10 miles if they carry the same thing. :)

Search for this.

GOOACC 6 Pack Automotive Relay Harness Set 5-Pin 30/40A 12V SPDT with Interlocking Relay Socket and Harnesses,2 Years Warranty

The problem is the safety circuit creates a voltage drop and you will get less than 12 volts to your starter solenoid. These starters don't like anything less than 12 volts on the solenoid. The fix is putting one of these relays in that require something like 8-12 volts to pull in.
