Looking for info for a model 450 snowthrower

I have a model 450 snow thrower that I use on my 1572. It runs great but I started to hear a howl from it. I figured it was due for some maintenance including topping off the gear boxes. This is where my problem comes in. Looking at the manual I got when I bought the snow thrower back in 1987, I see "Grease 737-0120" in the parts list for the snow thrower attachment, but on the exploded parts view I see "Lubricate with 8 oz. of plasticlube grease. Order part no. 737-0133" BUT on the parts blow-up that includes the augers (spiral assembly) I see "Lubricate with 4 oz. Shell Alvania Grease EPR00. Order part no. 737-0168."
No where in the manual is listed anything under maintenance on the lubrication of the snow thrower gearboxes. What grease is used for each gearbox and how much is needed? I don't know if the number was changed to use a different grease.

:bigthink:

Thanks for any info you may have.

Okay.... it's been almost 2 weeks and I guess nobody has any info on the gearbox grease.... Well, I still have to get it back together now that I have it all disassembled, cleaned and new ball bearings and a set of seals in. I noticed during disassembly, there was a lot of grease leakage out of the gearbox by the input shaft on both sides and possibly out of the output shaft. The seals on both the ball bearings and the oil seals by the brass bushings could be leaking, but I am not sure.
I don't think I want to use any retaining compound, but other than retaining compound what can I use on the OD of the seals, the inner race of the ball bearings and the outer race, that would seal up and protect against oil and grease leakage leaking out of the gearbox between the case and the oil seals or ball bearings?

I use marine grease on my 451 - both gear boxes use “ oil seals” which may as well not even be installed for all the sealing they do. The gearbox in the auger/spirol drive I installed a zerk in so I can just pump grease in untill it oozes out the spirol shaft- maybe every other snowblow for me. At the end of the year I pump it as full as I can get it ( Oozes out the input shaft coming from the discharge fan). The gearbox for the input pulley is mostly out of the elements. So I grease that one in the spring until grease is coming out around the shaft. I would assume the whine is coming from this input gear box. It has straight gears which are noisy under the best of conditions.
